The Aledo Bearcats scored 44 points in the first half of Friday’s road game against the Joshua Owls en route to a 58-14 victory.

Aledo continued its tear through District 5-5A, Division II, not allowing Joshua on the scoreboard until 11 seconds before halftime.

The Bearcats’ stout defensive effort allowed Aledo quarterback Jake Bishop plenty of opportunities to put his team up.

The young gunslinger took full advantage for a perfect 6-of-6 stat line, totaling 165 yards and three touchdowns.

Aledo Head Coach Steve Wood said Bishop has performed well all year, although his performance Friday was particularly strong.

“He’s been very clean I guess you would say all year long, but he was on the money the other night,” Wood said.

“Throwing it on the move, out of the pocket, and he didn’t play two full quarters in the game, so I’m very excited about the way he’s [playing].”

Wide receiver JoJo Earle proved Bishop’s biggest target, leading all Bearcat wideouts with 137 yards and two scores on only five receptions.

Fellow wideout Mylen Hayhurst added one catch for 10 yards and a score.

Tailback Jase McClellan, who has been dealing with an injury and did not play, got plenty of help from his teammates in the backfield.

Despite no Aledo running back breaking the century mark, the Bearcats still churned out 186 yards on the ground, primarily split between running backs Tre Owens (89 rushing yards and two scores), Ryan Anderson (54 rushing yards and a score) and Matt Tague (40 rushing yards and two scores).

Wood said Tague, who was formerly one of Aledo’s junior varsity runners, did well in his first action at the next level.

“We’ve seen him and watched him,” Wood said.

“It wasn’t a surprise. He’s very capable. We knew what he could do. We’ve had a few running backs, but Jase [McClellan] didn’t play, and we combined our JV teams last week, so we moved him up.”

The win moves Aledo, which holds sole possession of first in District 5-5A, Division II to 9-0, and 7-0 in district.

The Bearcats return home at 7:30 p.m. Friday for their regular season finale against the Arlington Seguin Cougars (0-9, 0-7).

Aledo finished as a Class 5A state finalist in 2017.
