Varsity Tennis Defeats Azle 18-3 and remains undefeated in District
On Tuesday, September 27, 2022, the tennis team traveled to Azle for their second-to-last district match and defeated the Hornets 18-3.
All doubles matches were victorious. Boys Line 1 Ian Leslie/Hogan Posey fought Azle’s best players, split sets and ended 8-6, 6-8 (7-5). Line 2 Ben Farmer/Craig Mason easily beat their opponents at 6-1, 6-2. Line 3 Jacob Heckathorn/Francois Britz earned their win in a match tiebreaker with a score of 6-4, 4-6 (10-4). Girls Line 1 Bryanna Orr/Kenley Germany won 7-5, 6-2; Line 2 Elli Kate Bussmeir/Paige Federman won 6-4, 6-1; and Line 3 Natalie Nawrocki/Patrice Loftin also earned their win in a match tiebreaker with scores of 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, (10-2).
The mixed doubles pair of Scott Mason and Eleanor Jack did not get to play their first round, as Azle did not have enough female players and had to forfeit that match.
In boys singles play, Line 1 Leslie won with a score of 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. Line 2 S. Mason lost his match in a close second set tiebreak, 4-6, 6-7 (7-9). Line 3 Posey played one of the longest matches, splitting sets with tiebreakers, then earning the win with a match tiebreak round; his scores were 7-6 (7-3), 6-7 (3-7), (10-6). Lines 4-8 had no problems with their competition, posting the following scores: Line 4 Farmer 8-1; Line 5 C. Mason 8-0; Line 6 Heckathorn 8-1; Line 7 Britz 8-5 and Line 8 Will Beyer 8-1.
The girls were equally impressive in their singles matches. Winning their matches were Line 1 Orr (6-2, 6-0); Line 2 Bussmeir (6-1, 6-0); Line 3 Germany (6-0, 6-0) and Line 5 Jack (8-2). Line 4 Federman and Line 6 Gracie Heydman fought hard, but lost their matches 6-8, and 7-9. The remainder of the girls line up was not able to play due to the lack of players on the Azle team.
The Bearcats record in District 5-5A play now stands at 5-0, with an overall season record of 11-2. The team will play its last district match against Granbury at home next Tuesday, 10/4. Come out to the courts and cheer us on!
